About NLP Group
The Alexandru Ioan Cuza University of Iasi (UAIC) is the oldest higher education institution in Romania. Since 1860, the university has been carrying on a tradition of excellence and innovation in the fields of education and research. With over 36.000 students and 1000 academic staff, the university enjoys a high prestige at national and international level and cooperates with over 180 universities world-wide.
The Department of Computing Machines was founded in 1965, as part of the Faculty of Mathematics of UAIC. In 1992 the Department of Computer Science, as was named at the time, becomes the Faculty of Computer Science (UAIC-FII). Even now UAIC-FII is still the only faculty of Computer Science in the classical universities of Romania (the others are integrated with faculties of Mathematics). The Master in Computational Linguistics in one of the 5 master formations in UAIC-FII, dating since 2001. Now, the Faculty of Computer Science counts over 1500 students and has more then 50 member academic staff.
The NLP Group, lead by Prof.Dr. Dan Cristea, includes post-doc researchers but also PhD, master and undergraduate students. The Group is more stable at the top and more fluctuating at the base. As undergraduate students get an interest on NLP research, after producing a graduation paper in this domain, they usually enrol in the Computational Linguistics master studies at the Faculty of Computer Science in UAIC. Eventually, some of them will remain also for advanced, PhD studies. Most of the members of the Group have a background in Computer Science, but some come also from the field of Linguistics. They are taught basic courses on computational linguistics (morphology and grammar formalisms, semantics, discourse structure, etc.) and natural language processing (programming and data structures, symbolic and statistical approaches in NLP, NLP workflows, corpus linguistics, etc.) at master level but also in the EUROLAN series of Summer Schools.
